Welcome to the new AEGIS Project website!

Please note that the [gis] and [gis-support] repositories are now hosted at aegis.dotsrc.org. Please see the "How do I access AEGIS software repositories?" FAQ article for further details

Please take the time to browse the FAQs and read about the aims and objectives of the AEGIS Project in the about pages.
Archie where art thou?
As some of you may know I worked hard over the summer to bring Archie up to date in preparation for a new AEGIS release. About a month ago I bowed out of all of my Arch related projects, including Archie, due to time commitments. Since then it seems that there has been no further progress with a new Archie release and this is extremely disappointing: both in terms of unreleased work on my part and in terms of Archie's future.

Fear not though! I fully intend to fork the most recent working Archie code as a basis for AEGIS in to the near future; we'll have a new release whether Archie does or not.

Work is continuing on several other Arch based live-cds so we'll be sure to switch to one of those as it becomes convinient!

New packages, now in [community]
After a considerable lapse I have begun updating many of the packages used in AEGIS. For convinience and reliability I have decided to move the bulk of the packages into the official Arch Linux [community] repository. I have full access to this repository and the AUR provides an excellent tracking and comments mechanism. This also makes more sense now that the project is established and not likely top vanish overnight!

The package list available on the site will now only list those packages outside [community] that are still held in the [aegis] repository. I will therefore develop a new list of packages for the contents of the AEGIS live-cd, as I intend to add many other programs which are already maintained by Arch developers.

AEGIS is far from dead
Firstly I'd like to thank everyone that has downloaded AEGIS from this site; I hope you have found it useful!

I'd like to reassure those of you that are watching the development of AEGIS that it is still very much underway. As you should know AEGIS is based on Archie. Like AEGIS Archie is basically maintained by a solo developer and so updates come as and when. There have recently been some major updates to Archie and we hope that a new release is forthcoming; this will form the basis of the next AEGIS release!

In the meantime I shall be updating all of the pkgs, including the latest QGIS release candidate! What with the improvements to Archie the next full ISO release should prove a worthy use of your bandwidth!

All the best,

dtw

Progress Update
I have updated several GIS packages and am now waiting to upload them. Development of Archie has resumed apace so I think you can expect to see a new AEGIS release around early May. This will feature all of the latest versions of the supported GIS applications and will of course provide all the benefits of recent Arch Linux and Archie development, including better hardware detection and possibly some broader hardware support.

Development Bottle Neck
As you should all know AEGIS is entirely dependent upon the integrity of the Archie live-CD. Development of Archie has taken a bit of a down turn recently and so I have not really been able to make a new release. However, I am trying to stay up to date with the regular pkgs and the next ISO release should be something pretty special!

A few updates on 1st release
I have now discovered and fixed several issues in the first release but one issue remains that I cannot fix. Unfortnately the apache webserver exhibits some odd behaviour and I have decided to just abandon that feature for now. This means that there will be no working mapserver-demo and maplab packages included. This is a not a massive loss in the short-term and I hope to get a fix in the long term.

The next release will include several fixes and new applications taken from Arch Linux's main repositories including R and Octave and several plotting apps. I have also made several UI improvements and am hoping for some new graphics. More news as and when...

AEGIS Alpha released for download
You can now download the first AEGIS alpha release from the ftp server. Be sure to check your md5sum before you complain it doesn't work!

However, there are several known issues:
1) Doesn't shutdown correctly - at shutdown X stops and swicthes to console but nothing else happens. Solution: just hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart manually
2) GPSMan complains about ~/.gpsman when run. Solution: manually delete ~/.gpsman and re-run gpsman.

1) is a problem in Archie I believe, 2) is a screw up on my part

AEGIS lives!
I have built the first complete release for AEGIS. It doesn't yet feature all the applications I have planned and doesn't yet run any of the demo web server applications. However it does contain:
  • grass 6.0.1 with docs and sample data
  • qgis 0.7.4 with docs and sample data
  • thuban-cvs with docs and sample data
  • terraview
  • GMT and iGMT interface
  • opendx
  • scigraphica
  • vis5d+
  • mapserver and mapserver-workbench
  • ...and many other GIS tools
We also have a few useful apps...
  • Opera Web Browser
  • gftp FTP Manager
  • leafpad Text Editor
  • graveman CD/DVD Burning Suite
  • gaim Instant Messenger
Later I'll also be adding:
  • gri
  • gpsdrive
  • r
  • octave
  • maplab

The surprisingly small size of the ISO does mean that I will be considering the addition of a few more spurious applications, such as a media player. The initial emphasis will remain on GIS and scientific applications but once I have stablized the core pkgs some elaboration will be possible.

Please remember that this is only the first release so there will be hiccups and oversights, these can be reported using our bugtracker on berlios.de - you'll need to register to submit a report.

For the future we will also be looking at initramfs support, provided by the archck patchset, and hopefully some new artwork from shadowhand.

The actual ISO will not be available for several hours, there will be a further annoucement when it is uploaded.
